The Mount Vernon Visitor’s Center
Mount Vernon, VA

 Mount Vernon Dining

Client:

The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association
Mount Vernon, VA

Synopsis:

Mount Vernon is now in the forefront of modernized historic sites for Washington area visitors; with revitalization of the mansion and meadows, streamlined visitor flow, and the addition of a major educational facility.  The new Visitor’s Center, on the exit from the Mansion tour, serves up to 10,000 patrons per day to George Washington’s home.  The fast food facilities, the Inn, and catering at events on the grounds provide sustenance for more than 1 million visitors per year.  Staff and docents also have daily access to this dining variety.

New visitor walking paths around the estate direct more patrons to food options and to the highly profitable gift shop.  Both retail outlets financially support the operation of the estate so they remained in operation during the construction, utilizing temporary facilities.

The Pavilion addition expanded foodservice to 5,600 ft2.  Servery stations include both national and house branded concepts.  Beverages and condiments are scattered to minimize queuing.  Centralized cashiering enables families and groups to select from a full variety of menu items and pay for purchases together.  A 125 seat pavilion was added and patio seats accommodate an additional 200.

The Inn at Mount Vernon was renovated at the same time to increase storage, improve sanitation, and upgrade the infrastructure in the kitchens of this full service restaurant.  The 3440 ft2 renovation and expansion also upgraded the loading dock allowing for deliveries away from the pedestrian path, separated trash collection, and wood storage for the Inn’s many working fire places.

Scope of Responsibility:

Programming; schematic plans; design development, and CAD contract documents; phasing planning; proprietary specifications; bidding and analysis; and installation coordination.  Other services included the design of temporary facilities, existing equipment survey, and multiple seating layouts.
